Summer Scheduling
Today is a good day for writing,
with my morning and afternoon free.
I’ll bring my pen and my notebook
to the backyard beneath a tree.
But first, I’ll just water the garden,
walk the dog around the block,
hang some laundry to dry in the sunshine,
find a spot for a meaningful rock.
I’ll fill up the empty bird feeders,
move the trellis where roses can climb,
check the milkweed for signs of monarchs—
oh, my goodness! Just look at the time!

Love your poem, JA! I'm enjoying imagining you sitting beneath your tree. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou had me at "But first" JoAnn. Enjoy your days, writing or . . .
ReplyDeleteHa--sounds like way too many of my days! Happy monarch checking...
ReplyDeleteYikes! I think most of my days ARE like the day in the poem! Kind of scary!!!! One more week of PD and then I'm hoping to regroup!
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone!
ReplyDeleteMarti, I'm enjoying that spot more than ever this year!
Linda, I hope you're enjoying your outdoor time, too!
Buffy, I've found only a few so far, but that's more than I saw last year!
Carol, best of luck to you!
So many distractions! Oh my, how I can relate!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that's how my writing afternoons typically end up, too! :-D
ReplyDeleteYour poem describes me perfectly. I was so enamored by the idea of all the days of summer to write. I've lost my poem a day goal in the midst of just enjoying the sun, the plants, the long walks, and the long talks. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, your poem really hits home for me. I'm trying to do better, but distractions are everywhere! Thanks for this one!
ReplyDeleteBoy, can I ever relate to the day getting away from me like that--but just think of all you did accomplish!
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I am just another poet who is getting distracted along the way. It's a wonder anything ever gets written, going by the comments on this post. :)
ReplyDeleteHello again and hahaha! I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in getting sidetracked. But I believe we should take advantage of lovely summer days--both so we don't miss the opportunity to enjoy being outside and so we have something to write about! Happy summer, everyone!
